Planning Commission secretary Sindhushree Khullar, an IAS officer of UT cadre, is getting twin promotions. Last week she was appointed as mission director for UPA government’s game changing scheme — direct benefit transfer (DBT). In April, she is likely to become member secretary of the Planning Commission, a position higher than her present post. As member secretary, she would be equivalent to rank of minister of state, a notch above her present rank of secretary to Government of India. This is the government’s appreciation for her role in helping the DBT scheme to succeed.

HC orders removal of Jaipur top cop
There is unease within the security establishment at the latest round of attacks on the police in Rajasthan. The high court last week verbally ‘ordered’ the state government to remove Jaipur police commissioner BL Soni and a handful of other officers till an inquiry into the use of force on a group of lawyers is completed. By most accounts, the lawyers who allegedly tried to break the barricade to enter the state legislative assembly weren’t exactly what could be described as a peaceful assembly. Soni does appear to have managed to get some public support but the lawyers — who got themselves an inquiry into the police action — aren’t scaling down their protests. That is something which is making the police uneasy, and angry. After all, there is hardly any precedent where a stand-off between the police and lawyers has ended in a police victory.
