A flyer who was denied a boarding pass because he reported late at the airport, made a hoax call about a bomb in a Spicejet flight to Ahmedabad on Sunday evening.
The passenger, later identified as Harender Khanna, initially tried to misguide security agencies by claiming that his phone was stolen. But the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), nailed his lie with the help of CCTV footage.
"At 7:40 pm on Sunday, the CISF was informed about a call. The caller had claimed that he heard a gossip between four persons in a cyber café about placing a bomb on Spicejet flight SG-148," a CISF officer said. The agencies concerned were alerted and the bomb threat assessment committee (BTAC) was formed.
The call was declared as specific and the flight was immediately taken to the isolation bay. All the passengers and check-in baggage was offloaded and verified."After the necessary measures, the 174 passengers of the flight were shifted to another aircraft and sent to the destination after midnight," the officer added. Meanwhile, another team traced Khanna, from whose phone the call was made. During interrogation, he revealed that he was supposed to fly to Ahmedabad by the same flight but he was denied a boarding pass as he reported late.
"Initially, he said that his mobile phone was lost for about four hours and someone gave it back after demanding Rs 5000. But after the CCTV footage was studied by CISF surveillance team, it was found that Khanna had made the call from the airport terminal and mobile phone was with him all the time ," the officer further said.
Khanna was handed over to the police for further action.
