President Pratibha Devisingh Patil on Wednesday cautioned against losing the long-term goals and pulling down the whole system while pursuing reforms to bring more transparency in public life and institutions.
The President's comments, in her address to the nation on the eve of the 63rd Republic Day comes after the civil society's pressure on the government to pass the key anti-graft Lokpal Bill that got stuck in Rajya Sabha after different parties raised several amendments on the bill.
"While shaking the tree to remove the bad fruit, we do not bring down the tree itself," Patil said, pointing out that effort to improve is an on-going process.
"There will be short-term pressures, but in this process we must not lose sight of the long-term goals, and must work together on our core national agenda," she added.
In an apparent message to various political parties and the civil society, Patil also said she hopes in matters of national importance and "in the spirit of national interest" the various stakeholders reach solution through discussions.
"This will strengthen the roots of our democracy and the foundations of our nation. We have a shared future and we should not forget that it can be achieved if we demonstrate a sense of responsibility and a show of unity," Patil said in her speech on Wednesday while emphasising that people should be willing to listen to each other.
In a reference to the civil society upsurge, Patil also lamented the "tendency to doubt almost everything". "Don't we have faith in our own people's strengths and in our institutions? Can we afford distrust amongst ourselves? Concord, not discord, is the way forward for a country as large as India," she said adding India's institutions may not be flawless, but they have coped with challenges.
