PC in valley, takes stock of security

Chidambaram, who is on a two-day visit to the Valley, will chair a high-level security meeting on Tuesday, which will be attended by chief minister Omar Abdullah, officials of the state police, paramilitary forces and representatives of the state and central home department.

He will later visit Anantnag district in South Kashmir, where he will review the security arrangements at Pahalgam hill station, about 90 km from Srinagar. Pahalgam is the base camp for the annual Amarnath Yatra beginning June 29.

This is the home minister’s first visit to the Valley this year.

Chidambaram is accompanied by a team of home ministry officials, besides Vijay Kumar, director general of the CRPF and Raman Srivastava, director general of the BSF.

Soon after his arrival in Srinagar, the home minister held a meeting with Governor NN Vohra at Raj Bhawan.

“The governor and the home minister discussed issues relating to pace of socio-economic development, overall security situation, arrangements for the forthcoming Shri Amarnathji Yatra, post-Panchayat election...,” said an official statement.
