The auditorium of Jesus and Mary College (JMC) was a jam packed space as His Holiness the Dalai Lama delivered pearls of wisdom to the gen next. Addressing around 2,500 students, he spoke of oneness of humanity, religious harmony, and using technology for the betterment of relationships and the secret of his great health. The event, organised by the commerce department turned out to be quite an interactive session.

“Never had we thought that someone so wise could be so much fun. He shared anecdotes from his childhood days when his parents would work on a farm. He told us how his mother would carry him on her shoulders and he would pull her ears just to be naughty,” says Sherry Talwar,a first year B Com (Hons) student.

“He also said a few things that I have been repeating to everyone I meet. He said, ‘We should be just as particular about mental hygiene as we are about physical hygiene. So we should never let any negative thoughts worry our minds.’ It’s an advice I will carry with me for life,” she adds.

Not just the wisdom shared by the leader but even his smile seems to have won over the hearts of the girls. “He is so cute,” adds Sherry. “His laugh is so childlike that it just melted our hearts. And even though the event was organised only for our college, so many students from other colleges attempted to get in. We were so gleeful that it was our college he had come to.”

Of the questions that stood out, one was by a teacher asking him how to control violence in class. Lama replied, “Teachers should develop close relation with young students. In order to develop that closeness, the teacher should show genuine sense of well being of the students. Educate them to become sensible human beings.”

His wit, wisdom and sensibility had the students so enthused that they took notes throughout the event. “He is so witty and his teachings are so enlightening that not only did students make videos, but so many of them even took notes of the things he said,” said Priyanka Sethi, president, Commerce Department.

“We will be celebrating the golden jubilee of the college and the 200th anniversary of its founding organization next year. In the run up to it, this is the first event that we have organised,” explains Jyotsna Sethi, associate professor, commerce department. “We asked HH the Dalai Lama to join us as he is the embodiment of the values that we strongly believe in, whether it is harmony, peace or love,” says Sethi.
