If the number of calls to the India Against Corruption (IAC) helpline is any indication, more and more people are seeking involvement in the movement even when the agitation was suspended after government’s promise about Lokpal Bill.
After anti-graft crusader Anna Hazare ended his indefinite fast on Sunday following the government’s assurance, everyone associated with the campaign thought the people’s response, too, would see a momentary pause.
But this isn’t the case. The IAC helpline number (0-9718500606) continued to receive calls in large numbers even on Monday. Similar to the numbers before Sunday, the helpline received about 40 to 45 calls per hour on an average. Three persons of Team Anna attend calls received at the helpline number round the clock.
“Since Annaji’s fast ended on Sunday, people have a new found interest. More and more people are now calling us to know how
they can be part of the movement,” said Amit Mishra, one of the persons attending the calls.
People from all parts of the country are calling in to know a number of things such as how they can join in, what do they need to do in their city, how can they become a volunteer, how can they help, etc.
“This just goes on to show that people’s expectations from the campaign have increased,” said a senior IAC member, adding, “(But) they do not want to be mere spectators but actually participate.”
However, not all calls are useful. The helpline also receives a number of calls that are outright funny or absurd, said Shalu Kannaujia, another member of IAC who attends calls.
