As the pressure to complete Commonwealth Games projects is building up, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Monday issued a warning to contractors asking them to complete their respective projects within the August 31 deadline failing which they will be blacklisted.
At a meeting with the contractors, involved in Games related projects, Dikshit also bluntly told them not to compromise with quality of work and said strict punitive action would follow if they don't ensure prescribed standards.
"The contractors who fail to complete the projects by August 31 will not only be penalised but also be blacklisted. At the same time they will have to ensure quality of the works," she said.
The meeting was attended by all the Cabinet ministers of Delhi government besides several top officials including Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta.
"Do not put us to shame. Your little carelessness will bring bad name to the entire nation," Dikshit said.
With little over two months left for the event, Dikshit has also been under attack as several key projects had missed several deadlines and most of the street-scapping projects are also running behind schedule.
Last week, Dikshit had ordered various agencies concerned to work "day and night" to finish works as soon as possible. During a pep talk with PWD engineers, she had also asked them to "rise to the occasion" and promised to reward them with one month's salary for completing the works on time.
Noting that government has got numerous complaints of sub-standard quality of work, Dikshit said all her Cabinet colleagues have been daily taking rounds of the Games projects and have been apprising her about deficiencies being observed.
The chief minister had given specific responsibilities to all the ministers to monitor progress of each of projects linked to the event.
Asking the contractors to visit the site themselves, Dikshit also told them to contact the government if they face any obstacle in completing the works.
She said Delhi got the opportunity to host the event after a stiff competition and everybody should put all the hard work to keeping in mind prestige of the country.
Dikshit stated in plain words that street lighting, street-scapping, putting up signage and greening work should be of high quality.
She also asked them complete landscaping and beautification beneath new flyovers as early as possible. needs to be expedited. Mehta said an inter-departmental coordination is being undertaken to overcome any delay.
Principal Secretary (PWD) K K Sharma requested the contractors to approach his department to make availablemore labour force. He said the exercise of lane marking on 106 km road length will be completed within 15 days.
