The royal art
This week, visit an art show of Mysore painting by Shobana Udayasankar’s. The show tries to revive the Mysore school of art. The traditional art form that once graced century old palaces and temples lost out to the more commercialised versions. Known for her minute and intricate ‘gesso’ work, Udaysankar tries to make this art accessible to audiences by capturing traditional, mythological and events which have shaped Mysore art.

A Life in Pictures by Jiten Hazarika depicts the rustic simplicity of the picturesque the Northeastern states. His in-depth knowledge of Sanskrit literature is reflected in his painting which is also rooted in the heritage of the region where womenfolk play a pivotal role in daily life. Lively coloured harmonies, arresting spatial configurations and figurative interpretations of life find space in his canvases.

Art Positive brings together a show of artworks and jewellery by renowned Indian contemporary artists. The current show is based on the concept of Alankar which in Indian aesthetics implies adornment.

Pestonji is a Hindi film from 1980s about Phirojshah and Pestonjee who are close friends and attempt to do everything together. They hope to marry the same day, as well. Unfortunately, both go to see the same lady, Jeroo. Pestonji marries Jeroo while Phirojshah takes a transfer away from the couple. During the following years, Phirojshah keeps in touch with the couple by mail. While visiting the couple years later, he finds out that Pestonjee has a mistress, and Jeroo does not know of this.

On the occasion of Sa’adat Hasan Manto’s birth centenary, Studio Safdar is hosting ‘Mantoiyat’ a Dastangoi presentation in Urdu. The presentation is compiled by Mahmood Farooqui and will be performed by Danish Husain and Mahmood Farooqui. This a closed-door event — you cannot enter after the event begins. A chadar will be spread after the performance and audience contributions will be shared with the artists.

Fun with cappuccino
I f you like a few laughs with your coffee then visit Costa the coming Friday. Costa Coffee is presenting its popular stand-up comedy series Laughaccino in a new format. Coffee Gehri Baatein by Sanjay Rajoura is an eight-part series with performances at various Costa outlets on Friday evenings. It will present one of India’s finest stand-up comedy artist in a hilarious avatar. Rajoura is a Delhi lad and has an acute sense of the ridiculous when applied to people’s pretensions. His observations of life in India and the West can enthrall an audience with their confrontational candour.
