The water contamination problem is not just restricted to a few pockets of the city. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) says they have been inspecting all 12 municipal zones and have found damaged pipelines in all of them.
Officials of the civic agency said that they have been updating the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) about these pipelines on a regular basis but no concrete action has been taken so far.
“From south Delhi to west Delhi, water pipelines in every part of the city are damaged and cut across drains. If the DJB has been claiming that they haven’t got the list, we can send it to them again. They should address the issue rather than indulge in blame game,” said VK Monga, chairman of MCD’s Health committee.
The civic agency is now demanding that the DJB undertake a survey of the entire 14,000km stretch of pipelines.
MCD’s Karol Bagh zone that has areas like Patel Nagar, Rajinder Nagar and Prasad Nagar had sent a letter to executive engineer (west-II) of DJB, stating that with the onset of monsoons, cases of cholera could surface.
It had asked him to repair the damaged pipelines that cut across drains as a precautionary measure on priority basis. The letter was sent on July 19. “Till date, they have repaired only a few pipelines in Karol Bagh,” said a senior MCD official.
On an average, most city hospitals are getting 10 to 15 people with symptoms of water-borne diseases like diarrhoea, vomiting etc daily.
On Monday, the DJB had claimed that they get an average of 30-40 complaints of water contamination daily. This number rises during the rainy season due to the overflowing of nullahs and sewers, it had said.
The MCD had, on Tuesday, written a letter to the Delhi chief minister asking her to look into the issue of water contamination at the earliest.
