In two months from now, the production and use of plastic bags will be completely banned in the Capital.
“Suggestions and objections have been sought till November 20. Following that, a final notification will be issued,” a senior environment department official said.
According to the draft notification, no person, including shopkeepers, vendors, wholesalers, retailers and hawkers, will be allowed to sell, store or use plastic carry bags for the supply of goods.
“No person shall (be allowed) to manufacture, store, import, sell or transport any kind of plastic carry bags — polypropelene, non-woven fabric bags — in the National Capital Territory of Delhi except for export purposes,” the notification reads.
Any violation could attract imprisonment up to five years and fine of up to R1 lakh or both.
The ban is being imposed under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.
Officials said the use of plastic covers to pack magazines, invitation cards and greeting cards will also be prohibited.
The ban, however, will not be applicable on containers used for packing food material, milk and “bags that form an integral part of packaging in which goods are sealed prior to use”, read the notification.
