Play time for adults

More and more theatrical acts in the city now have age restrictions on viewership, and art enthusiasts see it as a mark of a maturing audience.

Suitable for 18 years and above: a disclaimer often seen in movies has now got on to the live stage. Delhi’s theatre scene has been witness to many an ‘adult’ act this season, and experts say this is only the setting in of a new, mature revolution here.

In September, Epicentre in Gurgaon screened an adult play, Miss Blossom Callahan Patialewaali, to a full house. In the month of August, a dramatised reading of the erotic bestseller, Fifty Shades of Grey, took place in the city at the Akshara theatre. Yet another act to take place this month — Let’s Have Sex — also has age restrictions for entry. And, everyone’s appreciating it.

“When we had done the theatrical reading of Fifty Shades of Grey, we were a bit apprehensive that we might get some lewd members in the audience, but this was not the case. There wasn’t any vulgarity from the side of the audience. It was very decent and they engaged in intelligent conversation regarding the entire play,” says Jalabala Vaidya of Akshara Theatre.

Others feel that adult theatre, a common practice abroad, will take a while to gain widespread acceptance in India. The rare one to have come up a few years ago was Vagina Monologue. “These kind of plays will take time to pick up. When I had started looking for actors for one, it was very difficult because people thought that it is going to be vulgar and voyeuristic. But my play is about four people who are isolated from the society. They are lonely and depressing. The story doesn’t just deal sensitively with issues of sex but also with other aspects of life such as feminism and homosexuality,” says Ishwar Shunya, director of Let’s Have Sex. The play has been written by popular Russian playwright Valentin Krosgonorov. “People are definitely getting curious about these plays, and some are wondering if this one will have ‘those kinds of scenes’. They clearly expect something like that out of adult movies, but it’s different and artistic on stage,” says Shunya, whose next adult act, Orgasm, will go live in November.
