Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has rejected the proposal of Sonia Gandhi headed National Advisory Council that wages under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act should be same as minimum wages laws of different states.

Gandhi in a letter to PM had made the suggestion.

"...the wage under MGNREGA is ... independent of the provisions of the minimum wages act. The government is committed to protecting a real wage of R100 a person per day...," the PM said in a letter to Gandhi.
