She wanted to start her own business but not with her own hard-earned money.

Delhi police have arrested 24-year-old Ankita alias Jasbiri, a native of Parbudh Nagar in UP, for robbing her 62-year-old employer at knifepoint on Tuesday.

Jaya Rakesh, wife of a retired bureaucrat and a resident of Safdarjung Enclave, had hired the help from a placement agency in Kotla Mubarakpur four months ago.

The help was not verified by the police.

The maid fled with jewellery and other items worth R4.14 lakh. But her 'freedom' was short lived as the police managed to arrest her within 24 hours of the robbery.

Police said the maid had locked the victim in the bathroom after robbing her of her jewellery and a Nokia mobile phone. The team led by sub-inspector DV Singh under the supervision of SHO Sandeep Ghai arrested her from Budana in UP and recovered all the looted articles, including four gold bangles, a gold chain and the mobile phone.

Chhaya Sharma, deputy commissioner of police (south), said the senior citizen told the police that the maid threatened her of dire consequences if she didn't hand over her jewellery.

"Ankita threatened her that she would be killed by her accomplices, who were waiting outside the house. After grabbing the booty, Ankita locked the victim in the bathroom and fled," said Sharma.

During her interrogation, the maid revealed that she had planned the crime from the day she was hired.

"She was in dire need of money, as she had recently separated from her husband and four children," added DCP Sharma.
