A 38-year-old Delhi police constable allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a Metro train in Patel Chowk on Thursday afternoon. The victim, Sanjay, was deployed at the communications unit of the east district police.
The constable was allegedly depressed over his son’s illness, the police said. In a suicide note, recovered from the spot, Sanjay wrote that he was tired and did not wish to live any more. At 12:50pm, he went to platform number 2 of the metro station and jumped in front of a train.
Eyewitnesses said, the driver of the train could not apply emergency brakes on time and Sanjay was dragged for a few meters on the track before he died.
Some onlookers immediately contacted the CISF personnel on duty who in turn informed the police.
The incident triggered chaos on the platform with a number of people gathering to see what had happened. Officials said that they had to halt metro services for 30 minutes till the constable’s body was pulled out.
“A team reached the spot and pulled Sanjay out. His legs and arms were mangled and stuck under the train. It appears that the train hit his head and then crushed him. He seems to have died of excessive bleeding. The exact cause of his death will be ascertained after the autopsy report . The body has been sent for post-mortem examination,” a senior police officer said. He added: “Though we do not suspect any foul play, we have initiated a probe in the matter.”
The police have informed the family of the dead constable about the incident.
“We have recovered a suicide note from his pocket that read that he could not see his son suffering any more. He also wrote that no treatment had worked for his son and he was helpless. His family said that Sanjay was taking medication for depression and used to often talk about ending his life,” an investigator said.
The police have recovered a CCTV footage of the incident from the platform.
