The police on Thursday said that the women’s safety app, Himmat, launched earlier this year will now be available for iPhone users.
In an official statement, police said the application can be downloaded from the Apple app store from Thursday. Special Commissioner of Police (operations) Sundari Nanda said the police would launch another version for Windows phones.
Nanda said so far the app, launched on January 1, has been downloaded by 35,080 people. More than 2,000 SOS alerts from the users have been received, of which 1,500 SOS calls are from Delhi. Eight test calls have also been received at the Himmat control room.
“Since its launch, our police teams have intervened to meet the caller on 45 occasions when they did not speak to us after using Himmat. It emerged that they were only testing the calls. But we have also received four distress signals through the app. One was a case of domestic violence. In another case, a minor told us that she had been stalked. The local police and PCR van followed up on all the cases,” said Nanda.
Police have also launched the Himmat WhatsApp group on phone number 8800001091, which has so far received over 11,000 messages. Police said on the helpline number, apart from numerous complaints by women, they were also receiving obscene messages and images. Police warned that they would take action against those sending obscene texts and images to the WhatsApp group.
