Running out of time to take action against police personnel for using excessive force during the midnight crackdown on Ramdev supporters in June last year, Delhi police have started reaching out to villagers who had attended the camp and became victims of police apathy.
Delhi police have identified villagers from Rajasthan, Haryana and other parts of the country and are asking them to come to Delhi to identify the accused police personnel.
"We will show them the video of the crackdown and ask them to identify personnel who used excessive force. We are either summoning them to Delhi or a team will be sent to their village. The process will take time, as those who had come to the camp aren't from Delhi," said a senior police officer, requesting anonymity. After the crackdown police had taken details of people who had come to the camp.
Sources said after their identification, the accused policemen will be confronted with the footage and if found guilty, they will be arrested. After registering an FIR against unknown personnel on March 9, Delhi police had started the process of identifying the witnesses.
"They are the ones who claimed that few police personnel used lathi and indulged in stone pelting. Few of them have even filed a petition in court," the officer added.
But police sources said police personnel who had dragged and pushed Ramdev supporters might escape punishment as they did it to clear the ground.
Delhi police said the Supreme Court has directed it to investigate the role of officers who had indulged in brick batting, which endangered human lives and led to destruction of property.
Most of the senior officers who were present at the time of the crackdown have been transferred. Though Delhi police commissioner was himself present, the joint commissioner, deputy commissioner and even the SHO have been transferred.
