Modifications or enhancements in bikes will now be considered an offence and such vehicles will be seized, police said.
If riders of such bikes are minors, they will be released only after their parents give a written undertaking. These measures are a part of the Delhi Police strategy to control the growing biker menace in the city.
“Two boys on a bike will raise a flag and not be allowed to enter New Delhi district till the police personnel are satisfied they have a genuine reason to go there. People with families will not face any problem but bikers will definitely have to go through strict checking,” said Tejender Luthra, joint commissioner of police (central range).
The police feel it is the responsibility of parents/guardians to ensure their wards do not take to the streets during late hours on bikes.
“Recently, a biker from Meerut was caught performing stunts at India Gate. How do you explain his presence in the city? His family should have prevented him. That is why we have decided to involve families,” said a police officer.
In view of Sunday morning’s incident in which a biker was killed after the police opened fire on bikers who allegedly pelted stones at a PCR van, senior officers called a special meeting of personnel deployed in New Delhi district.
It was decided that PCR vans and traffic personnel will join hands with the local police and pickets will be placed to stop bikers.
“We have identified 17 vulnerable points from where bikers enter New Delhi area. On these points, a joint team of PCR personnel, traffic cops and local police will conduct checks,” Luthra added.
Police said too many entry and exit points make it difficult for them to stop bikers from entering the area.
“New Delhi is a favourite spot for bikers as you do not find heavy vehicles such as trucks here. Apart from the spacious roads, lesser traffic at night is another factor that makes it a favourite spot for bikers,” said a senior officer.
