A 49-year-old Head Constable was reportedly killed at the Barakhamba police station when one of his colleagues misfired from his official weapon while cleaning it, police said.
Another constable who was standing nearby was also injured in the freak accident. The deceased has been identified as TP Ilyas, a native of Kerala. The incident was reported from the Barakhamba police station around 11:15 am on Friday.
Ilyas was posted with the armorial team of New Delhi Police district and assigned training of new recruits posted in police stations and maintenance of arms, police said.
“There was a training session for five-six policemen at the police station. Ilyas and other personnel were in courtyard near the 'maalkhana' (inventory) of the police station,” a senior police officer said.
Recently-recruited Constable Mohit was standing on his right and checking a 9 mm pistol.
“When Mohit asked Ilyas to open the pistol, he said he would do it later. The magazines were not removed from the pistol. Illyas handed back the weapon to Mohit and while he was trying to close it, the weapon misfired and a bullet passed through the right side of Ilyas' chest,” said Shankar Dash, additional commissioner of police (New Delhi).
“The bullet came out of the body. His liver and heart were damaged in the incident,” he said. Ilyas was rushed to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
A Constable who was standing near Ilyas also suffered minor injuries, the officer said.
Police said they have registered a case of neglect in handling weapons, hurt and death and culpable homicide not amounting to murder at the Barakhamba police station. Police said so far there seemed to be no foul play in the case but investigations are still on.
