In a shocking incident, a 23-year-old pregnant woman from Kolkata was sexually assaulted by a lab technician of a private laboratory at the Safdarjung Hospital in the early hours of Saturday.
Police have arrested the lab technician, identified as Praveen, 24, after a case of attempt to rape was registered against him at the Safdarjung Enclave police station. Praveen worked at a private clinical laboratory located in south Delhi's Green Park area.
According to police, the incident took place around 1.30am at the hospital. The woman, in her ninth month of pregnancy, was admitted on Friday for her baby's delivery. The matter came to light after the victim raised an alarm and the accused was caught by doctors and other hospital staff.
In her complaint to the police, the woman said she had come to Delhi a few days ago and was staying at her relative's house in Defence Colony before being admitted to the hospital.
"The victim was admitted to the hospital on Friday for the delivery of her child but after her medical examination reports, doctors had decided to conduct her caesarean delivery on Saturday. She was shifted to a room in the Gynaecology ward of the hospital," said a police officer.
At around 1.30am, the officer said, Praveen entered the woman's room and on the pretext of doing a check-up, he first molested her and then attempted to rape her.
"Initially, the victim didn't realise what had happened. But when she sensed that he was crossing his limits, she raised an alarm. Hearing her screams, some hospital staff arrived immediately and caught Praveen when he tried to run away," added the officer.
A senior official in the hospital administration said, "It was an attempted rape and we are investigating the matter. The accused was not a hospital employee. He was handed over to the police."
