Are you all for anti-graft crusader Anna Hazare? If yes, it may just lead you to think that you have every ‘right’ to violate traffic norms.
Gandhi caps, Anna masks, the national flag, ‘I am Anna’ T-shirts are being used as tickets to take Delhi’s ‘strict’ traffic police for a ride.
“Gandhi caps have replaced helmets in a big way,” said an officer of the Delhi Police. Hundreds of Anna supporters on two wheelers participated in the rally that took the activist from Tihar Jail upto Mayapuri on his way to the Ramlila Ground on Friday afternoon. Many of them were without helmets, while several bikers were with two pillion riders.
But most of them were not issued challans.
On Wednesday afternoon, too, many of Anna’s supporters on two-wheelers had clogged India Gate and Jantar Mantar to take part in the protest rally called by team Anna.
They were also mostly without helmets and ‘riding triple’. Otherwise too, Anna’s supporters have been moving around on city roads fearlessly on bikes, said a police officer.
However, when it comes to Anna’s protesters, the traffic police department has failed to retain its image of being
the ‘noblest foe’ of road norm violators.
A traffic police officer said: “We are literally left with no power except for managing traffic these days. Forget issuing challans, we even do not dare to stop them and tell them not to violate traffic norms.”
Figures indicate that the traffic police prosecute an average of 1,000 people daily for driving two-wheelers without wearing helmets and over 100 persons for ‘riding triple’.
But in the last few days, they have booked an average of 700 people daily for driving bikes without wearing helmets and mere 50 bikers for triple riding.
“We have, however, started prosecuting protesters for violating traffic norms today,” said Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (traffic).
