Northwest Delhi police arrested four youths involved in a series of snatchings in the area.
Northwest Delhi police on Wednesday arrested four youths involved in a series of snatchings in the area.
The apparently took to the crime as a means of easy money after witnessing a snatching incident, which served as inspiration.
“The all wanted to live a lavish life. One of the accused told us they always wanted their wallets full of cash. They also used to gift their girlfriends expensive presents,” said a senior police officer. All four are Class XI students and stay in Rohini’s Sector-7.
Late on Wednesday evening police launched a hunt after a woman was robbed of her purse.
Two of the accused were rounded up during checks and their interrogation led to the arrest of the other two.
All hail from affluent families. One’s father owns a plastic factory while the another’s father owns a tube light factory. The third’s father is a real estate agent and the fourth’s family deals in dry fruits.
The 16-year-olds, who terrorised northwest Delhi for the past seven months, wanted to own loads of designerwear and take their girlfriends to pubs and clubs, the police said.
“They all belong to rich families. But their families were not fulfilling their demands so they sought to snatch. After the first few incidents they were confident that they would not get caught ever,” said a senior police officer.
Seven bank ATM cards, six cellphones, Rs 1,700 in cash and two motorcycles — a Bajaj Pulsar and a Hero Honda Karizma — have been recovered from them.
All of them have been sent to an observation home.
