To counter Delhi government's Ladli scheme, which provides financial assistance to girl children, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Tuesday announced a similar scheme ahead of the civic elections to be held this year.
In a special meeting of MCD's Standing Committee to finalise the budget estimates for 2012-13, it was decided that Rs 10 crore per year would be allocated to the scheme.
This money would be deposited in the accounts of students passing out of Class 5.
MCD commissioner KS Mehra had not made any such provision in the budget presented in December 2011."An escrow account will be created under which a total of Rs 5,000 will be given to students passing out of Class 5. The money, however, will be kept in an account till the student clears Class 12. It will only be given to them on producing a document certifying their clearing the examination," said Yogender Chandolia, chairman, Standing Committee, MCD. After a period of seven years, the Rs 5,000 will increase to Rs 15,000.
There are a total of 9.5 lakh students studying in MCD run schools, out of which 4.63 lakh are girls. A total of 1,740 schools are run by the civic agency.
In addition to this, MCD has also increased the scholarship amount paid to girl students from Rs 200 to Rs 500. Though this proposal was cleared in 2010 by the political brass, but the municipal commissioner had rejected it citing paucity of funds.
This time, however, the political brass has succeeded in getting it accepted.
The civic agency will also recruit 1,790 teachers for students with special needs. The recruiting process will start from next month.
While Mehra had only kept a budget of Rs 1 crore for recruiting process, the Standing Committee has increased it to Rs 18 crore.
