A 21-year-old salesgirl was found dead, with her head crushed, in the elevator of a Greater Kailash department store where she worked. The store is in the M-block market in Greater Kailash, south Delhi.
The police said Neetu Singh was a salesgirl in the three-storey food shop, Morning Store, in GK-I. The store had a “service lift” inside, where Neetu’s body was found.
Around 4.30 pm on Sunday, Neetu went upstairs to get some products. When she did not return after half an hour, a colleague went out to check. The police said Neetu’s body was found in a pool of blood inside the service elevator.
The department store informed the police around 5 p.m. “Prima facie, it seems that the girl died of head injury. We have sent the body for post-mortem and are waiting to ascertain whether she was attacked with some object,” said a senior police officer.
The police have registered a case of negligence against the department store’s owner NK Mallick.
“We are not ruling out foul play. As of now, we have registered a case of negligence,” said Anil Shukla, DCP (south).
“We are investigating whether the lift was being operated with mandatory clearance. We are also waiting for the post-mortem report to ascertain the cause of death,” he added.
Agosh Mallick, the son of the store owner, refused comment.
“The girl was working in the shop. She went upstairs to get some stuff and she may have bumped into one of the gates of the lift,” said Om Agarwal, the secretary of GK Shopkeepers Association, said.
“ She suffered injuries on her head and died on the spot. Her body was spotted by one of her colleagues,” he said. Neetu lived in Zamrudpur village, which falls in the GK police station area, with her mother and three siblings. Her father died few years ago.
