On Tuesday, the Supreme Court will deliver its verdict laying down guidelines for the media to report on judicial proceedings of sub-judice cases.
A five-judge Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice SH Kapadia had on May 3 reserved its judgment after hearing arguments advanced by media bodies, NGOs and corporate groups. The court began its hearing on March 27 that continued for 17 days.
The issue was referred to the Constitution bench after a complaint was made by the Sahara group on the alleged leakage of documents to the media relating to the dispute it had with market regulator SEBI.
On an application moved by Sahara, the court expanded its ambit and gave an opportunity to others who in the recent past had felt aggrieved due to the publication and broadcast of sub-judice matters.
The bench also allowed the Editors Guild of India, the Press Council of India, the National Broadcasters Association, a few national dailies and individual reporters to submit their views against regulating reporting of pending cases.
