Union minister of state for commerce Jyotiraditya Scindia backed Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi's call for a strong Lokpal to be constitutional body, accountable to Parliament, such as Election Commission.
Scindia also flayed the BJP for trying to find fault with his proposal. At the discussion on finance minister Pranab Mukherjee's statement on issues relating to the Lokpal, Scindia said Gandhi's views were in tune with the views of Anna Hazare, and his proposals were to "nip corruption in the bud."
Besides, Gandhi had spoken in the House on Friday after he was granted permission by the Lok Sabha Speaker. "We are not looking for cheap publicity unlike the BJP, which has always tried to divide people. We have to look at proposals like state funding of elections as suggested by Gandhi for cleansing the system," Scindia said.
Stating he was speaking in the capacity as a young Indian, Scindia said, "We should remember the means were as important as ends."
"There should be a confluence (sangam) of the people, Parliament and the Constitution."
Scindia said corruption affected every citizen and the country had resounded with a call to fight it following Anna Hazare's decision to take up the issue. "So, Parliament has to speak in one voice to convey its resoluteness to combat the problem."
"There is no difference between what we say and what we do," he said defending the UPA government's approach.
