The ghost of sealing may soon be revisiting the traders of Karol Bagh. After a mall was sealed in the area on Wednesday, the MCD is set to intensify its drive and is planning to target more such shops. Sources say, that the drive will affect more than 5,000 shops.
MCD officials said that main roads like Arya Samaj, Ajmal Khan Road, Desh Bandhu Gupta Road among others in Karol Bagh have been notified as commercial.
However, shops and malls located inside colonies or at the back of the main road have not been notified so, which disallows commercial activities on these stretches.
“The mall was sealed on Wednesday after a complaint was forwarded by the residents to the Supreme Court-appointed monitoring committee. We will now be taking action against all properties located that have been carrying out commercial activities from residential areas,” said a senior MCD official.
However, sources said that Karol Bagh is a highly commercialised area and 90% of the district will be affected if the sealing drive begins.
“Under Master Plan 2021, while some roads have been notified as commercial or mixed land use, others still remain residential in nature. However, traders have opened up shops on those stretches too. If the sealing drive starts, a large number of shopkeepers will be affected,” added the official.
Traders claim that as Karol Bagh is a Special Area and hence relaxed norms are applicable, which is why commercial activities are allowed even from colony roads too.
