The Uttar Pradesh police on Friday arrested a Special Operations Group (SOG) man, who was hired by an Indirapuram-based property dealer to kill his business rivals, from Baghpat district in Western UP, officials said.
Muhammad Abdul, who received an out-of-turn promotion and promoted as Head-Constable, was arrested on Friday, Superintendent of Police (SP) Deepak Kumar told Hindustan Times from Baghpat.
Azad Bainsla, a property developer from Indirapuram, and Sandeep Bainsla, Azad's relative, had hired Abdul and his colleague constable Praveen Bansal to bump off Sanjeev Sharma and Prakash Chand Khanna.
The two policemen and a sharpshooter criminal killed Sharma and Khanna on June 7 near the Loni-Baghpat border.
Azad, Sandeep and Bansal were arrested on Thursday. The sharpshooter, Chahat Kumar, is still at large.
Abdul was a part of a police team that gunned down an extortion gang headed by dreaded gangster Veerpal in Baghpat in February last year.
The Veerpal gang used to extort money from businessmen in Baghpat and killed people when they refused to pay up in December 2008.
After a huge public outcry, the Baghpat Police shot dead the gang members at Tatiri.
Sandeep Bainsla, who was a rival of the Veerpal gang, was as the prime informer during the encounter and later became friendly with the SOG men.
"Abdul was promoted to the rank of head constable after the encounters. After their involvement in the June 7 killings was revealed, both have been suspended and Abdul's promotion will be reviewed," Ghaziabad Senior Superintendent of Police Raghubir Lal said.
Azad, who allegedly ordered the hits to get rid of his rivals, flew to Bangkok before the murders and provided funds, arms and a Chevrolet Yuva car to the four accused.
