Staff of a security agency was arrested on charges of animal cruelty for injuring a dog by dragging it behind a jeep on Thursday night at Sector 58.
The stray dog was reared by a company executive, who shifted to IERO residential society in Sector 58 from Sector 46 a few days ago.
When society residents objected to the presence of the stray dog, the executive provided a dog leash and asked the security staff to keep the dog with them. The residents objected to that arrangement too, following which the guards tied the dog behind a jeep to take it away from the society.
“I noticed the dog being dragged behind the jeep. It was half conscious and was not even able to resist. I intercepted the jeep, but the driver fled the spot. I called police, who arrested one Himmat Singh, resident of Jharsa village,” said Amit Bhardwaj, a DLF Phase 2 resident, who first noticed the dog’s plight.
Bhardwaj said the accused were driving without noticing the condition of the hapless animal. The police said the vehicle belonged to SLV Security agency and has been seized.
Nikhil Mahesh, founder of Umeed For Animals Foundation, said the dog’s feet were wounded and there were injuries on its body. The animal was handed over to the foundation and is being treated.
“The dog is still petrified and is under trauma. It is on medications, but will take some time to start trusting humans again,” said Mahesh.
A case under Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act was filed against Himmat Singh and driver Rajnish Kumar at Badshahpur police station. Assistant sub inspector Kartar Singh, investigating officer, said Himmat was arrested and later released on bail.
