The 16-year-old daughter of an Indian Army constable was allegedly found murdered at a DDA colony flat in southwest Delhi's Dwarka on Saturday morning. The police arrested one of her acquaintances OmYadav — a construction material vendor residing near her home — for the incident later in the day.
Juhi Jha, a resident of west Delhi's Vikaspuri and a Class 11 student, was preparing for a medical entrance test and had allegedly gone ‘missing’ from outside her medical coaching institute on Thursday evening. “She left her house located in Vikas Nagar's Budh Bazar for her coaching classes at 3:30 pm on Thursday afternoon,” said V Renganathan, deputy commissioner of police (west). He said one of her classmates at the institute claimed Juhi had chosen to wait for an acquaintance after class instead of accompanying her home.
“After their class at the coaching institute in Naraina got over at 6:30 pm, she told her friend that she would go home later instead of accompanying her,” Renganathan added. According to police, the victim’s sister Jaya received two calls from an unknown number after Juhi went missing.
“The first anonymous call was made at 1 am on the morning of December 17. The victim’s sister claims that no one spoke and all she could hear was the rustling of leaves in the background,” said a police officer from the investigation team. He said another call was received from the same number at 8 am, but this time, Jaya could only hear Juhi say “Didi” before the call disconnected and the phone went unreachable.
Police said they zeroed-in on Om Yadav, 28, a resident of Hastsal village during a routine rounding-up of suspects from the village. Yadav was arrested immediately after he confessed to the crime during questioning. “We had detained Yadav for questioning when we realised that the victim’s cell phone number was the last dialled number on his mobile. He broke down and confessed to the crime almost immediately and has been arrested for murder,” the officer said.
Investigators then visited the ground-floor flat in Dwarka’s phase II to find Juhi lying on a single bed in a pool of blood, with her throat slit. “Prima facie examination has revealed that the victim’s throat was slit first before she was stabbed on the neck four
times. We are yet to ascertain whether sexual assault took place before she was killed,” the officer added.
