Former Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chatterjee blamed a faulty impeachment procedure and partisan lines adopted by the political parties for Justice Soumitra Sen's resignation from the Calcutta HC.
"I completely agree when Justice Sen said he was made the sacrificial lamb. This was not an action against a particular judge, but against the judiciary," Chatterjee told HT on Thursday.
Expelled CPM leader Chatterjee had even wrote a letter to Trinamool Congress, the biggest ally of the Congress, refuting allegations against the tainted High court judge.
"He understood that the parties will vote in political lines. The procedure followed in Rajya Sabha was also not right," Chatterjee told HT.
"The parliamentarian who moved the motion to impeach didn't say anything on the facts of the case. Then the judge, after his deposition, was asked to leave and the Rajya Sabha took the decision keeping him in the dark," Chatterjee said.
The former LS Speaker, who had often fought against judicial overreach in legislature's domain, said he is devastated as a parliamentarian, a lawyer and as an Indian.
"Justice has not been done to Soumitra Sen. This was a quasi-criminal trial. But the previous judicial order was ignored," Chatterjee said referring to a Calcutta HC order that cleared him of all charges.
When asked if Sen consulted him before deciding to resign, he said, "One of his juniors has spoken to me recently. I told him he has to take a call."
