He had almost made it a habit to kill people until the law caught up with him. Police arrested a Blueline bus driver who has been involved in five fatal accidents in south Delhi in the past 12 years. Every time he was involved in an accident, the 55-year-old escaped the scene of crime, procured another driving license on fake documents and would start driving again.
The accused, identified as Bhagwati Prasad, a resident of Khanpur, had been on the run since he first mowed down a cyclist in Chittaranjan Park in 1997. He was a DTC bus driver then.
What worried the police was that the accused was using a certificate signed by a metropolitan magistrate to procure the driving licenses and was hired by Blueline bus owners. He then allegedly killed a pedestrian in Civil Lines, three schoolchildren near Modi Mill flyover, an employee of Apollo hospital and a woman in Sangam Vihar.
Police have come to know that the accused was acting in cohorts with some policemen who helped him in getting the driving licenses.
A city court had declared him a proclaimed offender the accident case.
“Even when we arrested him on Monday from Okhla area he was driving a chartered bus,” said HGS Dhaliwal, DCP (south).Police said the arrest was affected when the police were scrutinising the records of people involved in accident cases who have not been arrested so far.
“During scrutiny we checked that there were a number of people in south Delhi involved in fatal accident cases. It was found that these drivers have been declared proclaimed offenders by the court but they continued driving buses,” said the officer.
During interrogation it was found that Prasad had earlier worked as driver on a contractual basis with the DTC, but after his involvement in the fatal accident in CR.Park area he lost his job. “He did not mend his ways and continued to kill more persons in road accidents with his rash and negligent driving. He killed four more persons after that. He somehow managed to get a slip signed by a metropolitan magistrate and misused this document to get a fake driving license every time his license was cancelled,” said the officer. Police said they were verifying whether this document was genuine or not.
“We even procured a driving license from his possession and a badge from his possession. We are trying to find out how he procured them,” said the officer.
In 2007 he had mowed down three schoolchildren near the Modi Mill flyover, a case of rash and negligent driving has been registered at New Friends Colony police station. He allegedly mowed down a man near Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals in Sarita Vihar, a case of rash and negligent driving and death due to negligence was registered in 2003. The same year he had mowed down a woman in Sangam Vihar.
