Delhi Police on Thursday received the postmortem report of 11-year-old Shanno Khan who died after she was allegedly made to stand in the sun. The report said she died of “epileptic seizures” and she had been suffering from “brain fever”.
As reported by HT, the autopsy report said Shanno did not die of “heat stroke”. Independent eyewitnesses examined by the police had said she wasn’t asked to stand in the sun by her teacher.
“The medical board has submitted the postmortem report but the final viscera report is awaited. The report said she died of epileptic seizures. We will take any action against the teacher after getting the final report,” said Karnal Singh, joint commissioner (northern range).
Meanwhile, several MCD teacher organizations have came out in support of Manju Rathee, the teacher they say is being wrongly implicated.
To protect teachers from false allegations in future, they have formed a MCD Emulation Committee (MCDEC) to defend teachers. “It is wrong to blame Manju for Shanno’s death. Some reports say Manju slammed Shanno’s head on a desk, making her bleed. But she did not touch the child. The proof is that the postmortem reports indicate there were no injury marks on the child,” said secretary-general Ram Chandra Dabas.
“What was done to the child is unknown as the only eyewitness, her eight-year-old sister Saima, keeps changing her statement. She cannot decide whether the teacher had put bricks on Shanno, or made her stand or sit in the sun,” he added.
“Officials at Maharishi Valmiki Hospital told us they were treating Shanno for brain fever for the past three years,” said M.Y. Ushmani, MCDEC member.
The committee said if Manju was not reinstated within five days, all 21,000 MCD teachers would stage a demonstration at Town Hall on Tuesday.
