The minor maid employed at the house of Dr Sanjay and Dr Sumita Verma had stayed alone out of her own choice and was not starving, claimed Sanjay's elder brother, Sandeep.
"There was enough food available at the Dwarka flat. She had been eating maggi and eggs. She was also having juice, as indicated by a half-empty juice bottle in the referigerator," Sandeep said.
"We have found empty packets of Maggi and a bottle of juice, which was half-empty. This means she was eating something, probably not proper food but Maggi and eggs. Even food was available but she chose not to eat," Verma said.
"She was eating selectively and probably in order to save herself from getting scolded for this, she cooked up the whole story," he added. A delegation of Indian Medical Association (IMA), Dwarka, also met the local police on Thursday. They said the doctor couple had a good reputation and had been framed in the case. "He used to hold free camps for poor. He even used to give lectures on diabetes to doctors and local residents. He is also an executive member of IMA, Dwarka," added Sandeep.
He claimed that the couple was planning to leave the maid at Sumita's parents's house in Vikaspuri. "But she started throwing tantrums at 3am when the couple was leaving for Thailand. They were forced to leave her at their Dwarka flat. She was given the house keys so that she could go out any time she wanted," he said, rubbishing claims that the girl was locked in the house.
The couple had also instructed her not to open the door to any strangers.
The couple's lawyer also denied allegations of torture and said they even had a video of Holi celebrations, in which the girl could be seen enjoying with the family.
"She was treated her like their own child and was given all the facilities, including good food to eat, good clothes and other amenities that included a separate bathroom. They had kept another part-time maid who used to come daily for household chores," the lawyer said.
