A six-year-old child drowned after falling into a flowing drain in south Delhi’s Jamia Nagar area on Tuesday morning, police said. His body was recovered after a two-hour rescue operation.
The boy’s family had moved to the area from northeast Delhi’s Usmanpur on Friday.
“The incident was reported from Shaheen Bagh area around 8.30 a.m.,” said a senior police officer. Mohammad Adil was playing with his friends when the incident happened.
According to police, Adil fell into a manhole that had been left open by the Delhi Jal Board after some maintenance work.
“Eyewitnesses said Adil was unwinding a music cassette and kept walking backwards on a concrete ramp above the drain. He failed to spot a gap and fell in,” the officer said.
Police said a motorcyclist who was passing by attempted to save Adil. “He jumped into the drain but failed to save him,” said the officer.
Fire officials fished out Adil’s body around 10.45 a.m.
“We have registered a case of negligence against unknown persons at Jamia Nagar police station,” the officer added.
