The motive behind the killing of crime reporter Jyotirmoy Dey and the identity of the killers continues to elude the Mumbai police. But the crime branch has released a sketch of the gunman, based on an eyewitness's account.
The suspect is between 20 and 25 -year-old, of medium built, 5.5 feet tall and is dark-skinned and was wearing a blue raincoat.
Police commissioner Arup Patnaik claimed on Monday that the police had some leads. Patnaik said leads would emerge from an analysis of the collated information on the murder. He also said the slain journalist had never approached the police about any threat made to him.
Meanwhile, senior crime branch officers revealed that at least 20 persons had been questioned so far on suspicion of being hostile towards Dey.
"These are people connected to oil smuggling or those who could have been affected by Dey's writings," joint commissioner of police, crime, Himanshu Roy, said.
He said the police had collected Dey's published and unpublished stories over the past month retrieved from a laptop. The police are also looking at details of his movements in the past month and his cell phone records.
The police have also intercepted the courier package that Dey spoke to his wife about during the last call he made to her on Saturday. Dey had sent some papers to the Philippines Tourism and Marketing Services office in New Delhi.
"We have asked the company not to open it. The packet will reach us soon," Roy said.
On being asked whether the police suspected the possible involvement of assistant commissioner of police Anil Mahabole as Dey was facing a defamation suit from him, and had recently complained to the police commissioner of being intimidated by Mahabole, Roy said, "Every possible angle is being probed."
