A letter from the chief electoral officer of Uttarakhand has saved the EC the trouble of having to postpone elections across the state.
"We will reschedule the elections in about 4% of the total polling booths," said chief election commissioner SY Quraishi, a day after the BJP demanded deferment of elections due to extreme weather conditions.
Uttarkhand CEO Radha Raturi told the EC on Thursday there was consensus among all parties not to postpone the elections as campaigning had started in full swing and most parties had finalised their lists.
Quraishi said the EC had prepared a list of about 480 booths that might experience snowfall or wintry conditions. "If required, we will reschedule the elections there," he said. The announcement will be made closer to the polling date. But other parts of the state will go to polls as per schedule.
Till Thursday morning the EC was looking at alternative dates, keeping in mind the cold conditions. The weather department had forecast that the maximum temperature on January 30, poll day, would be 3°C.
