First Delhi Police were in pursuit of AAP leader Somnath Bharti and now the former law minister is pursuing them.
Bharti walked into the Dwarka North police station on Wednesday evening offering to cooperate in an investigation where he faces charges of attempting to murder his wife and domestic abuse, but the ruling party legislator was turned away by officials.
“I was again told by the duty officer that the IO (investigating officer) was out of town,” he told HT. “They wanted a non-bailable warrant against me saying my interrogation was important. But what happened now?”
The Malviya Nagar MLA visited the same police station on Tuesday accompanied by his pet Labrador hours after the Delhi high court ordered police not to arrest him for two days in the case that has been dogging him for months.
Bharti has also approached a city court seeking cancellation of the non-bailable warrant that Delhi Police brought against him this week saying he was absconding.
“I brought my dog because I was told that his presence is important in the case. There was no SHO (station house officer) or the IO, so a cop at the reception told me to come later,” Bharti told reporters after his first visit. “They sent teams to my house and elsewhere to arrest me and now I am here but there is no one to interrogate me.”
Accused of ordering his dog, Don, to attack his wife, Bharti directed the canine to bite him in front of the media crews, but the pet merely stood by.
“Don has a cardiac problem and cannot lift his head, forget mauling anyone. I have a report from the vet,” the MLA said after the demonstration. “I still love my wife. It was a personal matter between us. Her honour is of utmost importance to me.”
In a series of tweets on Wednesday, Bharti attacked Delhi’s police commissioner BS Bassi and the central government while saying he had given a submission that he was prepared to be questioned at any time.
“Sri Bassi, CP is passing political statements at whose behest. (Prime Minister) Modi ji? and for what consideration, securing BJP seat post retirement?” he posted. “Just been informed that Delhi Police won’t allow me joining the investigation unless I am in their custody. Kuch to gadbad hai!!!”
