A city court cancelled the election of the Sonia Vihar Municipal ward, as nearly 5200 voters of the ward were illegally made to caste their votes in the Karawal Nagar West ward during the MCD polls held in the Capital in April 2007.
Additional District Judge Kamini Lau said, “The manner in which elections have been conducted is nothing less than a farce, and a mockery has been made out of electoral process”.
The court order came after hearing to a petition moved in the court by Kavita Rani, the unelected Congress candidate from the Sonia Vihar ward, wherein she had alleged the voters of Sabhapur were attached to Karawal Nagar West. The appellant, who had lost the election with a narrow margin of 465 votes to BJP candidate Annapurna Mishra also accused returning officer Darshan Singh and other concerned officials of willfully and malafidely benefiting the BJP candidate. The voters of the area had also handed over a representation to the returning officer requesting him to amend and correct the polling booth of Sabhapur Delhi, but in vain.
Secretary, state election commission K.R.Kishore submitted it was a mistake, due to a computer error.
“The election commission has been very candid about the error committed. It is very surprising that this happened despite the fact the voters of the area had highlighted the error to the returning officer,” said the judge.
