A 28-year-old pregnant woman died after she was hit by a speeding car on Saturday morning.

The accident took place in front of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on the road going towards Ber Sarai in south Delhi. Police said the woman was working at a nearby construction site and was crossing the road when the car hit her.

According to an eyewitness, the driver of the car had jumped to the wrong side of the road in an attempt to save a child who had come in front of the car but hit the woman instead.

“At 9:30am, the car was passing JNU when a child came in the middle of the road. In an attempt to save the child, the driver turned right and jumped to the wrong side. A woman was crossing the road and the car hit her. Since she was pregnant, she couldn’t react on time,” a senior police officer said.

The woman, identified as Chandni from Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh, was rushed to AIIMS trauma centre where she succumbed to her injuries. “She was brought to the trauma centre with head injuries. She died due to excessive bleeding,” the officer added. Her husband Manoj Kumar is an auto driver.

Police said the person who was behind the wheels at the time of accident has not been identified yet. “He had left his car behind at the accident spot. On the basis of registration number we are trying to trace the owner. His mobile phone has also been recovered from the car,” the officer added.

A case of causing death due to rash and negligent driving has been registered at the Vasant Vihar police station and further investigations are on.
