A 35-year-old driver of a delivery van died and six people were injured after his vehicle was hit by a speeding Swift car at Bhairon road intersection late on Saturday night.
The police said the incident took place soon after midnight when the Swift car, coming from ITO, rammed the delivery van which was taking a right turn towards Ring Road.
“Yogesh, Deepak and Amit were in the delivery van and they were coming from the Zoo side. Yogesh was driving the vehicle. As he turned right from the Bhairon road traffic light, the Swift car rammed the vehicle on the driver’s side,” said a senior police officer.
The occupants of the car have been identified as Abhishek, Rohit, Hemant and Vicky, and they all are in the age group of 25-28 years. They have also suffered injuries and are admitted at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and AIIMS. “It is not clear yet who was driving the Swift car. None of them is fit for A statement,” the officer said.
The three occupants of the delivery van were rushed to Lady Hardinge Hospital where Yogesh succumbed to injuries. The other two, Deepak and Amit, are still recuperating.
“Initial investigations suggest that the driver of the car had jumped the traffic light,” said the police officer. A case of causing death due to rash and negligent driving has been registered at the Tilak Marg police station.
