A seven-year-old boy and his father were killed, while his mother and two sisters suffered injuries, after a speeding Maruti Alto car allegedly hit them outside the gate of Anand Vihar inter-state bus terminal (ISBT) on Sunday morning.
The family had come to Delhi from their hometown in Uttar Pradesh’s Pilibhit.
According to police, the accident took place at 8am.
Ajay Sathi, 7, died on the spot after being hit by the speeding car while his father, Rishipal Sathi, 30, succumbed to his injuries at Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital.
Ajay’s mother Premwati and his two sisters — Saloni, 8, and Chhoti, 4 — are undergoing treatment.
A senior police officer said that the family had arrived in the Capital to meet their relatives and were hunting for transport after deboarding a bus at the ISBT.
“Eyewitnesses told us that the victims were trying to cross the road when the speeding Alto car coming from Ghazipur side hit them. The impact of the hit was such that the victims fell on the road and sustained severe injuries,” said the senior officer.
“Ajay and his father suffered severe head injuries and began to bleed profusely. Ajay died on the spot, while his father died during treatment at the hospital,” the officer said, while adding that the errant car driver was caught by bystanders and was handed over to the police.
“A case of rash and negligent driving causing death and hurt was registered against the errant driver, identified as Narendra Kumar, a resident of Harsh Vihar, at the Madhu Vihar police station. Kumar has been arrested and his vehicle has been impounded,” added the senior officer.
Asked if the driver was under the influence of liquor, the officer said that his medical examination confirmed that he was not drunk. “It seems that the accident occurred due to speeding. The driver probably failed to apply brakes in time and hit the family,” said the officer.
The relatives of the victims have been informed and the bodies will be handed over to them after the post mortem examination is conducted, the senior police officer said.
