The accident occurred after when about 15 members of the victims’ family alighted from rickshaws.

“Twinkle, 13, was crossing the road when a speeding Innova mowed her down. When my aunt Santosh Kumari, 36, rushed to her daughter’s aid, the driver, who was visibly drunk, crushed her too in a bid to escape,” Anuj Kumar, Twinkle’s cousin, said.

Another cousin, Shailja, said Twinkle died on the spot, but her mother died due to the delayed attention of the on-duty doctors. She was in a critical condition for a hour-and-half and no doctors were attending to her at GTB Hospital, she claimed.

Police said the family stays at the B-Block in Ghaziabad’s Brij Vihar area for the last 25 years. Bugga Kumar, Twinkle’s father, works at the wardrobe drycleaning experts in Noida. “We are upset with the way the police has handled the entire issue. There were some officers present on the spot and witnessed the accident but all that they said was that it was an accident and that the driver didn’t do it deliberately,” Anuj alleged.

Police said the bodies of the mother and daughter have been sent for postmortem examination at GTB Hospital.

“We have registered a case of death due to negligence and the errant driver has been identified as Inder Nath, a resident of the Brij Vihar (same as the victims), has been arrested,” said a senior police officer. In another incident, two men were killed and three others injured after a speeding Tavera car mowed them down near north Delhi’s ISBT Kashmere Gate late on Thursday night, police said.

“The accident was reported around 2am when a speeding four-wheeler’s driver lost control and rammed into a road divider, mowing down an unidentified 24-year-old male and Avdesh, 35,” said a senior police officer.

Police said Rakesh, 35, Naresh, 22, Deepak, 20, who were sleeping on the road divider at the time of the accident. They were rushed to the Sushruta Trauma Centre where they are recovering.

A case of causing death due to negligence has been registered against the errant driver.
