Stephen’s maange more
Wanna join St. Stephen’s College? Now, just great marks will not suffice. The college has increased the weightage of interview to 15 per cent this year as against 10 per cent in 2008. Ritika Chopra tells more.
An impressive academic record is a prerequisite for any student to secure a seat in one of the best Delhi University (DU) colleges. But for a St. Stephen’s College aspirant, just great marks will not suffice.
From this year, an interview will also be an effective endorsement of your intelligence. The college has increased weightage against this criterion to 15 per cent this year as against 10 per cent in 2008.
Consequently, the importance of Class X performance has taken a beating as its weightage has been reduced from 15 to 10 per cent. The change was communicated through a notice displayed in the college on Tuesday.
Stating that for some courses, marks were not an accurate indicator of intelligence, Principal Valson Thampu said, “Teachers felt they couldn’t shortlist students just on the basis of academic record.”
So, the interview weightage, which was reduced to 10 per cent last year, has been restored to 15 per cent.St. Stephen’s College is the only DU-affiliated institution, which conducts interviews for all courses.
Keeping in mind its minority status, the Supreme Court had validated its right to break away from the admission norms of the university in 1992. But the court had also put a cap of 15 per cent on the interview weightage.
The change in admission policy this year comes in wake of the recommendations made by the college’s staff council, a statutory body of all teachers constituted under the college constitution, few weeks ago.
The council has also recommended that at least 50 per cent of the seats be earmarked for the merit category as against 40 per cent in 2008. There is no communication on that yet.
