She was posted with the Special Protection Unit of Delhi police that is enthrusted with safety of women and children. But sub-inspector Vipin Bala Sharma’s (43) training failed to do what she needed most — save herself.
On Saturday morning, Sharma's her husband and 16-year-old son strangulated her on early Saturday morning at their southeast Delhi house.
"Vipin Bala Sharma, who was posted at Nanakpura, was assaulted and subsequently strangulated by her husband Anil Sharma (44) and her 16-year-old minor son at their house in Sunlight Colony's Kilokri area at around 2am. The incident occurred because of a financial dispute," said a senior police officer.
Police said the relationship between the victim and her husband, who had been running a small eatery near his house for the last seven years, had soured.
"On Friday night, the couple had had a confrontation outside Sharma's eatery. Things got out of hand and they decided to approach the local police to settle the issue. She told the police that her husband used to slink away from his financial responsibility towards their children and used to spend all his money on his own father and sister. On his part, Anil alleged that his wife Vipin demanded each and every rupee that he earned," the officer said.
Police said the matter was settled and the couple went home where their 16-year-old son, incensed at his mother for having dragged the domestic issue to the police, reprimanded her.
"Her son, who is appearing for his Class 10 board exams, ganged up with his father and scolded his mother for tarnishing the family's name. The argument turned violent and eventually Anil and his son strangulated the victim with an electric wire,” said the officer.
Around 5am on Saturday, the police said, the father-son duo approached the local police and turned themselves in. "Vipin's body was rushed to the Trauma Centre at AIIMS and her autopsy report is awaited. We have arrested her husband and her son will be dealt with according to provisions of law," the officer added.
Anil and Vipin's was a love marriage. After getting married in 1992, Vipin joined the Delhi Police in 1996. The couple has two sons — a 16-year-old and a 12-year-old.
"We have decided to extend psychological assistance to the couple's 12-year-old son who is appearing for his Class 7 exams. A psychiatrist has been roped in,” said Amulya Patnaik, joint commissioner of police (southern range).
