The Central Bureau of Investigation says it has collected concrete documentary evidence against Commonwealth Games organising committee Chairman Suresh Kalmadi, that establishes his role in the Queen's baton relay controversy.
A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) source, on condition of anonymity, said, "We have found direct evidence against Kalmadi during the custodial interrogation of TS Darbari and Sanjay Mahendroo, and during the examination of the documents recovered. We are deliberating his arrest on his return from the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China."
According to CBI sources, the custodial interrogation of Kalmadi close aids Darbari and Mahendroo has revealed that Kalmadi was aware of the siphoning off of funds to Darbari and Mahendroo's foreign associates.
Seeking further custodial interrogation of Darbari and Mahendroo, the CBI told the court, "The accused have remained evasive during custodial interrogation and we need to interrogate them extensively."
However, defence counsel for the accused contended, "Extending (their) police custody would be sheer humiliation, as the CBI has recovered all the documentary evidence."
Meanwhile, in a letter to the CBI director dated November 3, 2010, Darbari said that Kalmadi was at the helm of affairs and all decisions were endorsed and approved by him.
