To give more teeth to its garbage management and sanitation force, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation has created a post of director-in-chief in the environment management services department.
Sanitation and garbage, in which hundreds of crores of budgetary provision is spent every year, is one of the major challenges before the civic body.
Anodal officer will oversee and implement all sanitation and garbage management projects of the civic body. Till now, the engineering chief used to hold this additional responsibility.
A senior North body official said before the MCD split into three, there was a post of director-in-chief. “This new post, which has been approved by the standing committee, will be a big boost to the working of the department,” the official said.
Leader of the House Mahender Nagpal said the appointment would be done within a month. “A senior official of the chief engineer level will be appointed for this post. The previous arrangement had created additional workload, creating practical difficulties in matters pertaining to sanitation and garbage management,” Nagpal said.
An amount of Rs 597.49 crore is sanctioned for the sanitation wing of the civic body, which is 15.43% of the total annual budget. A total of 23 sanitation workers cater to over 60 lakh people in the north body’s jurisdiction.
