The Mumbai Police arrested a student of Rizvi College in Mumbai, Aamir Siddique Sheikh (19), on Monday night for kidnapping and murdering his close friend, Mukeem Akbar Khan (17). However, another accused Sarfaraz Sheikh (18) is still at large.
A Mumbai Police source, who did not wish to be named, said the motive could be the duo’s desperation to bribe their way through board examinations. Mukeem, a standard XII student of the college, left his home in Khar on Friday. He told his family that he was going to meet Aamir to take some notes. But at around 1.30 pm, Aamir called Mukeem's home, asking for him. This baffled Mukeem’s family. They told the police that at 2.00 pm, they received another call from an unidentified caller, demanding a Rs 2-lakh ransom. But the person did not call again.
Mukeem’s parents then contacted some of his friends, including Aamir and Safaraz, who had been close to Mukeem for more than four years. They even offered to help in the search. Mukeem's father Akbar, a taxi driver, lodged a missing diary with the Khar police. The police later found from Mukeem’s cell-phone records that he had spoken to Aamir for 66 times after leaving home on Friday morning.
This time, Aamir confessed to the murder and Mukeem’s decomposed body was found.
Aamir said they took Mukeem to a secluded place after assuring him that they had a set of leaked question papers. But Mukeem realised that he had been kidnapped. Aamir and Sarfraz panicked when Mukeem threatened to spill the beans. They killed him with a hammer and threw the body into a canal. The police have not been able to recover the hammer.
The police said Aamir, after murdering Mukeem, used his cell-phone to make the ransom call. The duo even appeared for practical tests on Friday and Saturday, said the Rizvi college authorities. “They were like my own sons. It’s unbelievable that they did such a thing,” said Mukeem’s father, while Aamir’s father Siddique Sheikh claimed, “My son is innocent. He cannot murder anybody.”
