A 16-year-old school student was allegedly waylaid, beaten mercilessly and stabbed to death by a gang of neighbourhood bullies — all minors — near his house in southeast Delhi’s Sriniwaspuri area on Saturday evening, the police said.
“The incident took place when Yash Singhal was on his way to the neighbourhood market to meet his friends as usual,” said Virender Singh Chahal, additional commissioner of police (southeast) on Sunday.
A student of class 10 at Cambridge School, Yash had loaned Rs2,500 to one of the minors some weeks ago.
“Yash was walking to the market in L-block when the boy, who was accompanied by eight of his friends who stay in the same area, stopped him and picked a fight. The argument soon turned into a violent fistfight during which one of the gang stabbed Yash in the back,” said a senior police officer investigating the murder.
When Yash didn’t turn up at the market, his friends started for his home only to find him bleeding near a garbage dump. Yash’s uncle Monish Gupta said, “He wasn’t in his senses after the brutal beating but was able to take a call from one his friends who came looking for him. He told them he had been beaten up badly and wanted them to tell his father about it.”
“Incidentally, my elder brother and Yash’s father had just reached home and was parking his car when Yash’s friends ran up to him and told him what had happened. We rushed him to the Trauma Centre at AIIMS where he passed away around 9.30pm,” Gupta said.
The police said the accused minor had decided to punish Yash after an argument broke out between the two on Thursday. “The gang leader had visited Yash a couple of days ago to invite his family for a function in his locality. It was then that Yash harshly asked him to return the money that he owed him. So, he decided to punish Yash,” the officer said. The officer added that eight minors living in Sriniwaspuri and adjacent areas such as Sangam Vihar and Nehru Nagar had been detained in connection with the crime.
