With the heat wave refusing to abate, Delhiites are witnessing the hottest June in at least the past five years.
In the last 25 days, this month has already witnessed 22 days of above 40 degrees Celsius temperature. The Met department has predicted more scorching days, if rains continue to evade the city.
Compared to this, the month of June in 2008 to 2011 was much cooler. June 2011 witnessed just 10 days of above 40 degrees temperature while 2008 witnessed even lesser number of hot days because of an early onset of monsoon.
Only June 2010 witnessed 22 days of heat wave, a number that may be surpassed this June in the coming two days.
"The temperature is expected to remain above 40 degrees for a few more days so this month is indeed unusually hot," said a senior official of Met department. He added the monsoon should arrive within this month.
According to the Met department, there are chances of rain on Monday evening that might bring down the night temperatures. This month, temperatures have remained normal only for three days when a few showers fell on the blistering city.
On Sunday, the city experienced a maximum temperature of 42.1 degrees and a minimum temperature of 33.3 degrees. Both temperatures were five degrees above normal. The humidity was recorded between 28 and 42 per cent marking a dry spell in the city.
For Tuesday, the Met department has predicted temperatures to hit a high of 41 degrees and a low of 32 degrees.
Owing to the high heat, a middle-aged man died due to suspected heat stroke in central Delhi on Sunday, police said.
Ram Pehal, who hailed from Bhiwani in Haryana, was walking towards a bus stop in Paharganj when he suddenly collapsed.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead. A senior police official said Pehal died due to suspected heat stroke. "It appears to be a case of heat stroke. The post mortem report is awaited," the official said.
