According to Delhi Fire Services (DFS) officials, the first blaze was reported at 9.15am from a shoe factory located in the Wazirpur industrial area in northwest Delhi’s Ashok Vihar.
“At 9am, a factory worker was starting an electric generator when fire broke out due to a short circuit in the machine and immediately spread all over the building,” said said a senior DFS official.
“Atleast twelve workers were working inside the factory when black smoke started coming out of the building,” the official added.
While most workers managed to escape, three of them got stuck inside and suffered minor injuries.
“One of the three victims, identified as Mukesh, 22, fell unconscious because of the smoke and was rescued by other workers,” the DFS official said. “He and two of his co-workers, who are yet to be identified, were rushed to the Babu Jagjivan Ram hospital, where Mukesh is still recovering, while the other two have been discharged after first-aid,” the DFS official added.
Twelve fire tenders had to toil for atleast three hours to douse the blaze and property worth lakhs is estimated to have been destroyed in the blaze.
In another incident, a minor fire broke out at Air India’s Connaught Place (CP) office at 11am on Sunday morning.
“The fire broke out in a waste material storage room located a floor above the main office building. Two fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the fire was doused within minutes. Thought the cause of the blaze is yet to be ascertained, no one was injured in the incident,” the DFS official said.
